Heavy-hearted right now because of the sudden loss of a friend and fellow parishioner. The John 3:16 verse was used yesterday at our service, and together with John I's reflections, helps lift a bit of burden. Donna was firm in her faith and has now been welcomed into the heavenly kingdom. His love is eternal and complete.

Wonderful and so true. I've always been so thankful that God in His grace gave us His word full of flawed saints. How different it would be to read the bible full of heros who always won, never sinned, make perfect decisions, always yielded to the spirit...I think it would leave me hopeless in life. But how gracious God is knowing we just can't live up to that standard and He gives us His unending grace and love in spite of our unbelief and weakness...now that's perfect love.

You ideas and comments are moving to the heart. So many times we think God works in giant ways and actions but many times they are in simple, childlike ways that are confusing to our minds and hearts. Maybe that's why we come to God like a small child who trusts and just looks up to the face of their dad with expectations that he will fix it all. I've learned over the years just to trust God and his ways even when they make no human sense. God is always trustworthy and that makes me feel secure. I'm going to really enjoy your words and thoughts...thanks again for adding me to the list. Coralee :)

This posting reminds me of the struggle between faith and works...that has caused angst for believers over the centuries. In one way it is comforting for me to realize that in our time we struggle with similar compelling questions of faith. Thus the need for our own journey to be informed by how the Spirit touches our modern experience.

I thought you might like to know about another plant that was once yours. It is doing very well and is as healthy as ever. (It also had to be cut back several times due to space and once, recently, in order to fit it in my car.)

You gave it as a gift of 'good luck' some eight, or so, years ago. Though not very creative, it's name is "Ficus Benjamin" (and last year I added his close relative, "Ficus Benjamina," to my collection.)

I've been reading your blog for quite some time now. While my beliefs are not as literal as your own, I regularly attend mass at St. Agnes-by-the-Lake Episcopal Church. The combination of open-mindedness and tradition speaks to me and I've made some very dear friends over the years.

I wish you and your family a warm and meaningful holiday season and I thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas. We can never be reminded too often to practice daily gratitude and to reach out in kindness to others; we never know how much difference the simplest of gestures might make in another's life.

Peace...
